The Secret Key
Your Secret Key is a second secret, beside your master password. Vallkey makes it on your first device, and it’s never sent to us. It looks like this:
NP1-4T7K2M-9QXW3D-R8H5C-2YJ6N-K7P0A
Because of it, your vault can’t be opened by guessing your master password, even from a stolen copy of our servers’ data: an attacker would need the Secret Key too.
When you need it
Whenever you log in on a new device, with your email and your master password. Devices that are already logged in keep it for you.
Where to find it
- Under Account in any Vallkey app that’s logged in.
- In your Emergency Kit.
The Emergency Kit
The Emergency Kit is a page to print, or save as a PDF. It holds your sign-in address, your email, your Secret Key, and a line to write your master password on, if you choose to.
Print it from Account, then Recovery code and Emergency Kit.
A kit printed right after you make a recovery code shows that code too. Vallkey never shows a recovery code again, so that’s the copy to keep.
Where to keep it
Somewhere safe, apart from your devices and from your email’s password: a fireproof box, a safe deposit box, or with someone you trust. Your recovery code and your email together open your account.
A saved PDF isn’t encrypted. If you keep one, keep it somewhere you’d trust with your passwords.
If you lose it
Print a new kit from any logged-in device. If you’ve lost every device too, your recovery code gets you back in, with a new Secret Key.
