Getting started

Vallkey on your computer

The Vallkey apps for Mac, Windows and Linux: how each unlocks, when it locks, and how it works with your browser.

Mac

The Mac app shows your whole vault in a window, and unlocks with Touch ID. It locks when the Mac sleeps, when its screen locks, and after the time you choose behind other apps. Sync Now and Lock Vallkey are in its Vault menu.

In Safari, Vallkey for Safari fills: the Mac app carries it, and its Account page says whether Safari has it turned on.

Windows

The Windows app unlocks with Windows Hello, where it’s set up: your face, your fingerprint or your Hello PIN. Elsewhere it can unlock with a key in the Credential Manager, or with your master password.

It has a tray icon, and locks when the computer wakes from sleep.

Linux

The Linux app can unlock with your system keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet). The keyring isn’t biometric: anyone who can use your session can read it, so turn it on only for a computer that locks with your own password.

It locks when the computer sleeps or its screen locks, and has a tray icon. Some desktops need AppIndicator support for the tray.

On both Windows and Linux

  • The tray icon opens Vallkey, locks it and quits. While it’s there, closing the window keeps Vallkey running.
  • Exports and files are saved where you pick, in the system’s Save dialog.
  • Copied passwords are cleared from the clipboard after 90 seconds, and when Vallkey locks.
  • One unlock for your browser: pair the browser extension with the app, and it unlocks whenever the app is unlocked. See Unlocking the browser with the desktop app.

Every desktop app

Each keeps your vault on the computer, encrypted, so it opens and works without a connection, and syncs after every change.
