Getting started

A vault on this device only

Keep a Vallkey vault on one device with no account and no server: how to make one with a license, what it can't do, and how to back it up.

A local-only vault lives on your device and nowhere else. There’s no account, no email address and no server: nothing is sent anywhere. It’s paid for once, with a license.

Make one

On the first screen, or when adding another account:

  • Browser extension: This device only.
  • Windows and Linux app: This computer only.
  • iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android: Keep my vault on this device only.

Choose a master password, type it twice, and paste your license, whole. Vallkey then shows your Secret Key, with an Emergency Kit to save and print, as for any vault.

A device keeps one local vault at a time, beside any accounts. It’s listed as This device only.

What works

Everything a vault does that doesn’t need a server: every kind of item, the generator, Security and the breach check, one-time codes, passkeys, autofill, import and export. Your master password and Secret Key open it, offline, and so does your face or fingerprint once you turn that on.

What isn’t there

Sharing, families, legacy contacts, share links, a recovery code, Travel Mode, item history, files kept with items, and pairing your browser with the desktop app all need an account. The apps hide them.

Back it up

  • There’s no recovery. We can’t reset your master password, and with no server there’s no recovery code. Your Emergency Kit and your master password are the only way in.
  • Losing the device loses the vault, unless you back it up or sync it. Use Export, as Vallkey with files or Credential Exchange, and keep the file somewhere safe. An export file isn’t encrypted.
  • To keep several devices in step, sync through a folder you own.

The license

A license is a file Vallkey signs. It’s checked on your device, offline, once, when the vault is made. Opening the vault never asks for it again, so a lost license never locks you out.
