If Vallkey warns you about a key

What Vallkey's three key warnings mean, why they're rare, and exactly what to do if you ever see one.

Vallkey keeps a public log of every account’s key, so that its own servers can’t swap someone’s key without being seen. Your devices check that log by themselves. These warnings mean a check failed.

“Vallkey didn’t use this person’s key”

Shown when you look someone up, and the log doesn’t back up the key the server sent. Nothing was shared with them.

What to do: compare fingerprints with the person, and try again later. See Checking a fingerprint.

“Vallkey’s public key log has held a key for your account that isn’t yours”

The log, at some point since your account began, held a key for your email address that your devices never made. Someone who shared with you then may have sealed their vault to that key instead of yours.

What to do: compare fingerprints with the people you share with, and with your legacy contacts.

“Your devices were shown different public key logs”

One of your devices checked a log that isn’t the one another checked: the server showed them different versions.

What to do: the same. Compare fingerprints with the people you share with.
