Runs entirely in your browser. Vallkey never sees what you make or check here.

How it works

Each word is picked at random from EFF's long list of 7,776 words, with your browser's cryptographically secure random numbers. Every word adds log₂ 7,776, about 12.9 bits.

Capitals at the start of each word add nothing: anyone guessing would try them. A number adds a little, and helps with websites that insist on one.

The list is downloaded once from this site; the passphrase is made on your device and never leaves it.

Questions

What's a passphrase?

A password made of random words, like 'velvet-orbit-canyon-tulip-mosaic'. It's easy to type and to remember, and just as hard to guess as a jumble of characters, when the words are chosen at random.

How many words do I need?

Five words from this list give about 64 bits; six give about 77. For a master password, use at least five.

Where do the words come from?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's long word list: 7,776 common, distinct English words. Vallkey's apps use the same list.

Can I pick words myself?

Don't: people choose predictable words. The strength comes from the words being picked at random, which is what this tool does.
