Switch

Switch from Bitwarden

Export a .json file from Bitwarden, import it in Vallkey, and keep everything. It takes a few minutes.

Step by step

In Bitwarden

  1. 1

Sign in to the Bitwarden web vault.

  2. 2

    Choose Tools › Export vault.

  3. 3

Pick .json, not .json (Encrypted), and confirm with your master password.

In Vallkey

  1. 4

In Vallkey, open Settings › Import, and choose Bitwarden.

  2. 5

Choose a .json file. It's read on your device: nothing is sent anywhere unencrypted.

  3. 6

Check the summary of what will come over, then confirm.

  4. 7

Delete the export file, and empty the trash it went to: it holds your passwords in the clear.

What comes over

What comes over

  • Logins, cards, identities and secure notes
  • Folders and collections, as tags
  • One-time passwords, custom fields and favorites
  • Match settings for websites

What doesn't

  • Files attached to items: download them first, then add them to the items in Vallkey.
  • Items in the trash.
  • Passkeys, which Bitwarden's JSON export doesn't carry in a form Vallkey reads.

Still deciding? Compare Vallkey with Bitwarden.

Questions

Is it safe to export from Bitwarden?

The export file isn't encrypted, so keep it on your own computer, import it straight away, and delete it afterwards. Vallkey reads it on your device.

Will I lose anything?

A few things can't come over: Files attached to items: download them first, then add them to the items in Vallkey; Items in the trash; Passkeys, which Bitwarden's JSON export doesn't carry in a form Vallkey reads. Vallkey lists them before you confirm.

Can I keep using Bitwarden while I try Vallkey?

Yes. Importing changes nothing in the other app. Many people run both for a week, then cancel.
